The event will have 48 teams split into 12 groups of four. Two teams from each group, as well as the eight best third-placed teams, will advance to the next round of the tournament. In the second stage, 32 teams will compete. It's worth noting that the original 2026 World Cup format was a little different. The 48 teams were to be split into 16 groups of three. The FIFA Council, however, opted to change this arrangement. According to FIFA's official website, the new system "reduces the risk of collusion and ensures that all teams play at least three matches while providing balanced rest time between competing teams."
